Tariq ibn Ziyad was a Muslim military commander who played a significant role in the Islamic conquest of the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain and Portugal) in the 8th century. He was a Berber general serving under the Umayyad Caliphate.

In 711 CE, Tariq ibn Ziyad led an army of Muslim troops across the Strait of Gibraltar, landing at what is now known as Gibraltar (named after him, as "Jabal Tariq" meaning "Mountain of Tariq"). He was following the orders of Musa ibn Nusayr, the Umayyad governor of North Africa. Tariq's forces faced off against the Visigothic Kingdom, which ruled over the region at that time.

Under Tariq's leadership, the Muslim forces achieved a decisive victory in the Battle of Guadalete in 711 CE, which led to the rapid Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula. Tariq and his forces continued their advance, capturing cities such as Cordoba, Toledo, and Seville. The conquest of the peninsula by the Muslims continued for several years and ultimately resulted in the establishment of the Umayyad Caliphate's rule over the region.

Tariq ibn Ziyad is often celebrated as a hero and symbol of Islamic conquest and expansion. His military successes in Iberia paved the way for the spread of Islam and Islamic civilization in the region. His legacy is remembered in history as a key figure in the early Islamic conquests and the subsequent Muslim rule in Spain.
